Students may chose from the readings in the Coursebook, in the ISB Library collection, or readings on reserve in the ISB library; and write a short summary of two readings and find a new reading in the law or library and information science literature for each of the topics to share with your classmates during each class period. The summaries should be typed on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper and double spaced. They should be submitted to the professor through the WebCT email at the SLIS 5366 WebCT classroom site by midnight of each class period. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE READ ALL OF THE READINGS FROM THE TEXTBOOK, PANELLA, MUELLER & KEHOE - HANDBOOK, DRAGICH & SCHANK - STAFF ORGANIZATION, MERSKY & LEITER - SPIRIT, BURCH & YOUNG, the COURSEBOOK, and ANY OTHER READINGS IDENTIFIED AS REQUIRED.

Report Assignment #5
AUTOMATED SYSTEM REPORT Due: April 17, 2000Each student should select one of the systems noted below (or a system of your choice with prior approval of the professor) and write a ten page paper. To get started, read literature from library and information science including; articles, books, newpaper articles, company annual reports, etc. Use the Internet, many automated system companies publish information about their systems on the Web.
Your paper should include useful information for someone not familiar with the system you are researching. Write or call for information from the vendor if you wish. Each student will make a fifteen minute report to the rest of the class on the system.THE PAPER MUST:- Discuss the history and development of the systemResources:
- Describe the system
- Identify and discuss the modules that are available
- Note its strengths and weaknesses for use in a law library
- Note its place in the world of automated library systems
- List law libraries or legal information collections that have implemented the system
- Include comments by law library users (librarians and others)

Research Paper Due: May 8, 2000A research paper on some aspect of law librarianship is required of all students. It will determine forty percent of the final grade for each student.
I have listed some possible topics for your consideration. This list is not intended to be exhaustive or precise, rather merely suggestive, to provide you with current topics of interest in the field of law librarianship so that you can tailor the subjects to your own interest. You are strongly encouraged to pursue your own interests and stray far from this list. BE CREATIVE
The paper should be ten or more pages in length, plus either footnotes or endnotes. A bibliography should also be included in the report for all resources used in the preparation. A style manual should be used for this report. Please indicate the style manual that you selected in a note attached to the report. Please be consistent, points will be reduced from your grade if a consistent style is not used.
