Question Sets

Forty percent of your grade will be determined by the completion of the excercises, and the Internet Scavenger Hunt Workbook. There is only one way to learn about law books and computer assisted legal research and that is to use these resources. Lectures alone make legal literature abstract and dull.

You will be asked to complete problem exercises that will require using legal materials and research techniques in a law library. The weekly assignments are DUE every two weeks as noted on the Class Calendar. You must complete all of the assignments in order to satisfactorily complete the course.

Shepard's Tutorial

How To Shepardize - Your Guide to Complete Legal Research Through Shepard's Citations - Complete the Shepard's Tutorial by Friday,  , 2000.

Internet Scavenger Hunt

Internet Scavenger Hunt: We will also look at legal information resources on the Internet.  For each type of resource there are scavenger hunt exercises.  The scavenger hunts for each type of legal information tool are DUE every two weeks as noted on the Class Calendar.   Each student must also evaluate two legal information Internet resources for each type of legal resource.  During each class session we will compare the print to the electronic resource.   We will talk about the sites in class.

Bibliography/Pathfinder - Team Project

Thirty percent of the course grade will be based upon the Institute team project -the annotated legal bibliography or pathfinder that each student is required to write. Students should meet with the instructor by the third class meeting to discuss the possible topic. A list of suggested bibliography topics is included in the Coursebook.  The Team Projects are due by 5:00 p.m. to the instructor by Friday, December 1, 2000.   Your pathfinders will be put on WEBct for access to your classmates.

Final Examination

Twenty percent of the grade in the course will be determined by the final examination covering the entire course.

The final examination will be a take home examination designed to test your understanding of the tools and techniques involved in legal research and your understanding of legal publishing and bibliography in general. It will be composed of some combination of objective, short answer and essay questions as well as legal research problems.   The take home final examination is due by 5:00 p.m. to the instructor by Friday, December 8, 2000.

Class Participation

Ten percent of your final grade will be based upon your class participation.
