#2: LEGAL AND GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SEARCH ENGINES, META-INDEXES AND DIRECTORIES

There are a number of subject directories or meta-indexes that specifically classify the specialized subjects on the Internet such as legal and government information. These indexes classify Internet resources according to broad subject categories in the law at varying levels of sub-categories that attempt to lead the user to the best resources for a particular information need. Meta-indexes provide comprehensive coverage of legal and government information on the Internet. Many also provide powerful search engines that allow users to search specific Internet resources related to the law, government, or regulatory information. Because of the large amount of information and the number of computer systems connected by the Internet, it can be difficult to find and access these resources. These subject directories classify Internet resources according to broad subject categories in the law at varying levels of sub-categories that attempt to lead the user to the best resources for a particular information need.

The GrandDaddy of legal resources on the Internet is the Legal Information Institute sponsored by Cornell Law School, integrates both the Gopher-based and World Wide Web-based offerings of the Institute. There are links to recent Supreme Court decisions, the full U.S. Code, and the Cornell Law Review, Menus containing documents and sources by legal topic and hundreds of sites for other interesting legal resources are also included. The Seamless Web Site contains links to legal news, original articles and writings on law-related businesses, the homepages of lawyers and law-related businesses, and other law-related sites.
