ABSTRACT/SUMMARY

Long before the settlers crossed into the Great Plains there were the prairie dogs.   Vast in number, these small rodents were a powerful force in the maintenance of the fertile grasslands of the prairies.  Prairie dogs are prey to numerous predators.  Their intricate expanses of burrows provide protection from enemies and benefits to the environment.  These little critters are an important part of the history of the United States.
