Abstract / Summary

This is the story of Chico Mendes, a simple rubber tapper in the Amazon in the 1980s, who organized local workers and their families to defend the forest against its destruction at the hands of powerful landowners and cattle farmers. Chico was trying to protect the means of survival of his fellow rubber tappers, and knowingly put himself as a target for increasing death threats in a region tainted with inefficient judicial system and corrupt police force. Unknowingly, however, he was in the center of emergent international discussions on greenhouse effect, climate change, and saving Earth's natural resources.
