 Storyteller Biography
Jana Macmillan
as Medusa

Reno, NV

INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION

Jana MacMillan has been telling stories all her life ... and to her great delight has finally found a venue where people take her stories seriously.  Thirteen years of her professional life were dedicated to her work as a TV reporter, producer, anchor and radio talk show host.  Her love of storytelling took root in those 13 years and flourished despite a lack of formal training in storytelling as an art form.

Jana is currently pursuing her goal of obtaining the highly coveted Academic Certificate in Storytelling from the University of North Texas and her Master's degree in Information Science from the same institution.  She also holds a B.A. in Journalism and Art from the University of Nevada, Reno.

In her everyday life, Jana works for the Washoe County Library System in Reno, Nevada where she incorporates storytelling into her programs for youth and adults, appears as Medusa from time to time to scare the patrons and moonlights as a martial arts instructor and coach in her spare time.

"Stories, and the telling of them are such an integral part of who we are that many of us take them for granted and don't think about how we tell stories every day.  We use stories to communicate with each other about all the little things that make up the fabric of our worlds ... telling a friend how are children are doing in school…giving a description of how our team won the tournament ... reminiscing about losing our first tooth or going to our twentieth high school reunion.  Story surrounds us, completes us, and gives us a way to share what we are and who we are with others."    -- Jana MacMillan, 2008.
